Book Club: Lie To Me

Hey everybody! It is the beginning of the month which means it is time for This Modern Broad’s Book Club! This month I read Lie to Me by J.T. Ellison.

It says right on the cover that fans of Gone Girl will gobble this one up. If you read this blog at all you’ll know that I am a fan of Gone Girl and other thriller type books. As soon as I saw the mention of it on the cover I knew it would be up my alley and I threw it in my ever expanding Amazon wishlist. (Aptly titled “To Read” ha!). And just before Christmas, my roomie somehow found said wishlist and purchased a couple of books for under the tree – including this one! Bonus points for the Hubbie on this smart move! I couldn’t wait to dig in!

First let me start off by saying, pick this book up now! It is not exactly like Gone Girl. It is about a disintegrating marriage like Gone Girl. But it is also about certain events that preceded the marriage and certain events that occurred during the marriage. And how lies and different betrayals have all effected the situation the couple finds themselve in now. It definitely has a different twist to the mystery than Gone Girl. I can’t say too much without giving it up but you will initially think it follows a somewhat similar trajectory but at the end you realize its not what you thought it was at all. In some ways it is a little cheesy compared to Gone Girl but it is a different book so I can’t compare it too much.

I will admit that the ending of this book really pissed me off. Not even the ending, per se, but an additional scene at the very end of the book. In my opinion, this scene is superfluous to the plot line of the book. When I finished it I was stunned. I didn’t completely comprehend what happened, how this exactly played into the plot line, etc. I pulled out trusty Google. There were a lot of different theories online. One of which being that the author left it open for a sequel. In some ways I would like this to be true because it makes me feel better about the ending. But then at the same time I can’t figure out how they would ever have a sequel. But I don’t write books so what do I know? Despite my anger at the ending, I would definitely recommend this book. It is a great read and definitely a page turner. It is perfect for the beach.

What is everyone reading right now? Any suggestions for my next book?

  1. A friend of mine just read The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah. She said it was great and was sad she finished the book. It was that good! I plan on getting it.
